As this isn’t a normal episode, these won’t be normal show notes. I don’t want to give too much away, because you should really listen to the interview yourself and, because this doesn’t reference a lot of historical events, there won’t be too many links to outside sources. There will still be some, though! Think of this as your internet version of notes in the margins of the interview.

At the top of the interview, Eddie talked about how he spent the first part of his career playing “attractive dummy” characters. You know, like Joey on Friends. Oh, speaking of that, look what I found!

Gotta love the internet!

Eddie talked about how the only options for male actors, a lot of the time, are the “attractive dummies” or the “super serious” but unemotional hero characters. He mentioned David Duchovny on his favorite show, The X-Files.

You know, that one show.

You know, that one show.

To be honest, I definitely know the kind of characters he’s talking about. I love the show Person of Interest, but the deep, gravel-voiced serious male hero is almost allergic to smiling and has the deep tragic past is a TV staple that is embodied there perhaps better than anywhere else in TV history. I mean, look at this main character. He’s so dark, that it makes the lighting dark.

“Look at how serious and tragic I am".” - John of Person of Interest (It is a very good show, though)

Honestly, whenever I think about that kind of character, I just flash back to 30 Rock and the scenes whenever Jack and Devon would get into their deep-voiced whisper arguments.

The official YouTube caption directs you to prepare for 10 minutes of “gravelly voices and homoerotic undertones.” This is a good and accurate caption.

Side note: it is way harder to find a video/gif/screencap series of the “talking like this contest” line than it should be.

He also talked about playing Sully on Bones. I remembered him on that! It was a good character! Eddie was totally right about that character being a “Pete starter kit.”

Plot twist: his character did, in fact, do exactly that. Dream big, Sully.

He also gave us some amazing stories about how he and Joanne Kelly got cast as Pete and Myka. I have recreated the story here, as best I can, in gif form—video unfortunately was unavailable. Please enjoy.

We also talked a bit about how Pete’s love of cookies came to be!

He was also generous enough to get into some heavy themes and open up about how his own sobriety influenced the character of Pete’s creation and portrayal.

Also, because of our interview, I will never be able to look at the scenes of Joanne Kelly with her teddy bear the same ever again.
